How To Calculate Slope Percentage

Step 1: Measure Vertical Rise

Step 3: Verify Run Is Not Zero

Ensure the horizontal distance is positive (non-zero).

Why: Division by zero is undefined; a vertical line has no well-defined slope percentage.

Step 4: Divide Rise by Run and Multiply by 100

Grade % = (rise / run) × 100 to convert the ratio to a percentage.

Why: Multiplying by 100 scales the decimal ratio into a more intuitive percentage scale.

Step 5: Calculate Angle Using Inverse Tangent

θ = arctan(rise / run) or arctan(grade / 100) to get angle of inclination.

Why: Angle provides additional geometric context (e.g., a 100% grade = 45°).

Detailed Example

Scenario: A road rises 15 meters over a horizontal distance of 100 meters. Find grade %.
Step 1 - Measure Rise: Vertical rise = 15 m (elevation change).
Step 2 - Measure Run: Horizontal run = 100 m (distance traveled horizontally).
Step 3 - Verify Non-Zero Run: Run = 100 m > 0 ✓
Step 4 - Calculate Grade %: Grade = (15 / 100) × 100 = 0.15 × 100 = 15%.
Step 5 - Find Angle: θ = arctan(15/100) = arctan(0.15) ≈ 8.53°.
Verification: At 100% grade, arctan(1) = 45°. Our 15% (0.15 ratio) yields ≈ 8.53°, reasonable ✓
Result: The road has a grade of 15% and an inclination angle of approximately 8.53°.
