Scientific Breakdown
Order of magnitude is a rough measure of size expressed as a power of ten. It is commonly used to compare very large and very small numbers without needing exact precision.
Example: 1234.56 has order of magnitude 10^3.
Why use sqrt(10) as the threshold?
It is the midpoint between 1 and 10 on a logarithmic scale.
Is order of magnitude always base 10?
Usually yes, though other bases can be used in specialized contexts.
What about zero?
Zero does not have a defined order of magnitude.
Can I enter negative values?
Yes. The calculator uses the absolute value for the magnitude calculation.
