What is Magnetic Declination?

Magnetic declination is the angle on the horizontal plane between magnetic north (the direction the north end of a magnetized compass needle points) and true north (the direction along a meridian towards the geographic North Pole).

This angle varies depending on your position on the Earth's surface and changes over time as the Earth's magnetic field shifts. Navigators must account for this to ensure they are following the correct geographic path.

The Calculation Rule

"East is Least, West is Best"

  • East Declination: True Bearing = Magnetic Bearing + Declination
  • West Declination: True Bearing = Magnetic Bearing - Declination
