What is Hydraulic Radius?

The hydraulic radius is a measure of the efficiency of a channel to flow water. It is defined as the cross-sectional area of the flow divided by the wetted perimeter.

A larger hydraulic radius means the flow has less contact with the channel walls relative to its volume, leading to less friction and more efficient flow. It is used in the Manning and Chezy equations.

The Formula

R_h = A / P
  • R_h = Hydraulic radius
  • A = Area of flow
  • P = Wetted perimeter
