Calculate the delta-v requirements for a Hohmann transfer orbit between two circular orbits.
Last updated: March 2026 | By ForgeCalc Engineering
A Hohmann transfer orbit is an orbital maneuver that, under the central force of a dominant mass, moves a spacecraft from one circular orbit to another circular orbit in the same plane.
It is the most fuel-efficient way to move between orbits (assuming impulsive burns) and uses an elliptical transfer orbit that is tangent to both the starting and ending circular orbits.
The delta-v is calculated by finding the difference between the circular orbit velocity and the periapsis/apoapsis velocity of the transfer ellipse.
