The Parts of Division

Division is the process of splitting a number into equal parts. It is the inverse operation of multiplication.

  • Dividend: The number being divided.
  • Divisor: The number you are dividing by.
  • Quotient: The result of the division (how many times the divisor fits).
  • Remainder: The amount left over that is smaller than the divisor.
100 ÷ 3 = 33 R 1
Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient R Remainder

Division Methods

Integer Division

Focuses on how many whole times the divisor fits into the dividend. The leftover part is expressed as a remainder.

13 / 4 = 3 remainder 1

Decimal Division

Continues the division process past the decimal point to provide a precise numerical value.

13 / 4 = 3.25

Example Calculation

Divide 25 by 4:

1. How many 4s in 25? 6 times (6 * 4 = 24)

2. Subtract: 25 - 24 = 1

3. Quotient is 6, Remainder is 1

4. As decimal: 6 + 1/4 = 6.25

Final Answer: 6 R 1 or 6.25
