Work and Power Calculator

Work & Power (Parallel Force Only)

Calculate mechanical work and power when force is parallel to displacement. Uses W = F × d. ⚠️ This tool does NOT handle angled forces: if force acts at an angle θ to motion, use W = F × d × cos(θ) instead.

⚠️ Parallel Force Assumption: This calculator uses W = F × d, valid only when force acts parallel to displacement (same direction). Force at an angle θ requires W = F × d × cos(θ). No angle input is available; if you have angled force, manually apply the cosine factor or use cos(0°)=1 for parallel, cos(90°)=0 for perpendicular.

Work vs. Power

Work is done when a force acts upon an object to cause a displacement. It is a measure of energy transfer. If the force is applied but the object does not move, no work is done.

Power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred. Doing the same amount of work in less time requires more power. One Watt is defined as one Joule of work per second.

The Formulas

Work (Parallel Force)

W = F × d

Where F is parallel to displacement d.

General form (angled force): W = F × d × cos(θ)

Power

P = W / t
