What Place Value Means

Place value is the value a digit gets from its position in a number. In base 10, each step to the left represents a factor of ten.

How to Read Place Value

  1. Start with the rightmost digit in the ones place.
  2. Move left through tens, hundreds, and thousands.
  3. Move right of the decimal point for tenths, hundredths, and beyond.
  4. Write the number in expanded form to see each digit's contribution.
expanded form = sum of non-zero place values
