Place value is the value a digit gets from its position in a number. In base 10, each step to the left represents a factor of ten.
Example: 1234.56 expands into thousands, hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, and hundredths.
Can place value include decimals?
Yes. Digits to the right of the decimal point are tenths, hundredths, and so on.
Does a leading zero matter?
No. Leading zeros do not change the value of the number.
Can this handle negative numbers?
Yes. The sign is ignored for the digit breakdown and shown by the values.
Why use expanded form?
Expanded form makes it easier to see how a number is built from each digit.
