What Is the Mode?

The mode is the value or values that occur most often in a dataset. A dataset can have no mode, one mode, two modes, or more than two modes depending on its frequency pattern.

How to Calculate the Mode

  1. List every value in the dataset.
  2. Count how many times each value appears.
  3. Identify the value with the highest frequency.
  4. Report all values that share that highest frequency.
mode = most frequent value

Worked Example

For 4, 7, 2, 4, 8, 4, 7, 9, 2, 7, 4, 3, the modes are 4 and 7.

4 appears 4 times, 7 appears 3 times

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dataset have no mode?

Yes. If every value appears the same number of times and that number is one, there is no mode.

Can there be more than one mode?

Yes. If multiple values share the highest frequency, the dataset is multimodal.

Does the calculator accept decimals?

Yes. Any finite real values are accepted.

What if I type invalid text?

Invalid tokens are rejected instead of being ignored or converted to zero.
