Central Tendency: Mean, Median & Mode

Mean (Average): Sum of all values divided by count. Formula: mean = Σx / n. Most sensitive to outliers.

Median (Middle): Middle value when data sorted. Robust to outliers. For even count, average of two middle values.

Mode (Frequent): Most frequently occurring value. Useful for categorical data. Can have multiple modes (bimodal, multimodal).

When to use each:

  • Mean: Symmetric, normally distributed data (test scores, heights, continuous measurements).
  • Median: Skewed income data, house prices, datasets with outliers.
  • Mode: Most common category (favorite color, survey responses, discrete choices).

How to Calculate All Three

Calculate Mean

Sum all values, divide by count. Formula: Σx / n

Find Median

Sort values, pick middle. If even count, average the two middle values.

Identify Mode

Count frequencies, find value(s) appearing most often (frequency > 1).

Example Calculation
