What is an Impact Test?

An impact test measures a material's resistance to fracture when subjected to a high-speed load. This determines the material's toughness.

By comparing the initial potential energy of the hammer to its energy after breaking the specimen, we can calculate how much energy was absorbed during the fracture.

The Formula

E = m * g * (h1 - h2)
  • E = Absorbed Energy (Joules)
  • m = Hammer Mass (kg)
  • h1 = Initial height (m)
  • h2 = Final height after fracture (m)
