Calculate the circumferential stress in a thin-walled pressure vessel.
Last updated: March 2026 | By ForgeCalc Engineering
Hoop stress is the circumferential stress in a rotationally symmetric object, such as a pipe or a pressure vessel, resulting from internal or external pressure. It acts tangentially to the cylinder's wall.
This calculation assumes a "thin-walled" vessel, where the ratio of diameter to thickness is typically greater than 20. For thick-walled vessels, Lame's equations should be used instead.
