What is Hooke's Law?

Hooke's Law states that the force needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance is proportional to that distance. It is a fundamental principle in physics and engineering, particularly in the study of elasticity.

The law applies as long as the material remains within its elastic limit. If the spring is stretched too far, it will undergo permanent deformation and no longer follow Hooke's Law.

The Formula

F = k * x
  • F = Force applied (Newtons)
  • k = Spring constant (N/m)
  • x = Displacement from equilibrium (m)
