"Dog years" attempts to translate a dog's age into an equivalent human age to help us understand their life stage. The outdated "multiply by 7" rule significantly underestimates canine aging. This accounts for the fact that a 1-year-old dog has already reached physical and sexual maturity, which would take a human about 15 years.
The current evidence-based formula recognizes that dogs mature unevenly: Year 1 ≈ 15 human years (rapid growth and development); Year 2 ≈ 9 additional human years (reaching social/behavioral maturity); After year 2, aging continues but varies by size. Small dogs age about 4 human-years per calendar year, medium dogs about 5, and large/giant dogs about 6 or more. This explains why small breeds often live 14-16+ years while giant breeds may only reach 7-10 years—larger dogs simply age faster after their first two years.
Understanding your dog's relative age is practical, not just trivia.
