By multiplying annual mileage by the car's lifespan and dividing by its fuel efficiency, we can see the true cost of ownership and the environmental footprint of a single automobile.
We first calculate the total miles driven over the car's life, then find the total gallons required, and finally multiply by the average price per gallon.
Burning one gallon of gasoline produces about 8.8 kg of CO2. A car using 6,480 gallons over its life emits ~57 metric tons of CO2.
