What This Calculator Measures

This calculator estimates calories burned during exercise by combining your average heart rate, age, body weight, and exercise duration.

Heart rate can help reflect exercise intensity, which is why it is often used in calorie-burn estimation formulas.

The result is best treated as an approximation rather than an exact measure of energy expenditure.

The Heart Rate Formula

Male Formula

[(-55.0969 + (0.6309 × HR) + (0.1988 × weight in kg) + (0.2017 × age)) / 4.184] × duration

Female Formula

[(-20.4022 + (0.4472 × HR) - (0.1263 × weight in kg) + (0.074 × age)) / 4.184] × duration

Weight is converted internally from pounds to kilograms using 1 kg = 2.205 lbs.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter your age in years.
  2. Select male or female to match the formula used.
  3. Enter your body weight in pounds.
  4. Enter your average exercise heart rate in beats per minute.
  5. Enter your workout duration in minutes, then click Calculate.

Example Calculation

30-year-old male, 160 lbs, 140 BPM for 60 minutes

Given:
Age 30, weight 160 lbs (72.562358 kg), average heart rate 140 BPM, duration 60 minutes
Step 1:
Calories per minute = 12.835922
Step 2:
12.835922 × 60 = 770.155308
Result:
770.155308 calories
